I know you meant it when you said
that you were sorry for the mess
but you were such an inconvenience,
I counted days down until you left.

Problem Child

You're still humming
all the same songs.
You always
were your mother's son.
So let's throw our Bibles
off of the bridge's edge
and into the river that you fell in.
This is my first day back.
Oh,
and when you pull up outside my parent's house;
keep the noise down.
You were always too loud
so pipe it down.
You're as bad as you ever were...
Just like your posture.
Never have shed the label of a problem child
but I know how you like that.

Joyride

So...
When you’re driving your car,
are all our ghosts on the back seat?
Laughing and putting you off...
Billowing smoke from crooked teeth.
We knew the roads like our palms
so we kept our maps on our walls.
They’ll fade in the sun
whilst we rot on your lawn.
We draped our bones
out the window
while our frames reposed
in passenger seats.
Our knees were cold...
You in your sister’s clothes...

New Again
02:36
|
|

Sun-kissed,
blistered skin.
Oh God, I’m new again.
She leads me to
where the water’s blue
and I dive right in.
Our lazy bones,
laid out and drenched in gold,
are lived in.
We strew our clothes
for a place to rest
our limbs.
Breathe in...
Breathe out...
Breathe in...
Breathe out...

Video Games

We might as well just shed our skin...
Give our bodies to the sun...
Soak up some colour in our limbs...
I swear to God,
if we leave our bones exposed
just long enough, they’ll turn to gold.
I must have misplaced my faith.
Where I’m from it never stays this warm...
At least not for long.
Why so forlorn?
We can burn up on your lawn.
While we lay out to waste,
they play their video games.
I hope they’re warmer in the shade.

Bloody Knees
03:38
|
|
||
We cut our teeth
on concrete and bloody knees.
Not perfectly
but they’re chipped at least.
So when we shed our leaves
and pined for warmth,
we kept a cold face
and nodded along.
You can try to twist my arm.
Let’s see how far
it goes before it breaks
or I give up.
We picked our bones
and we stepped on cracks.
Felt like we knew ourselves but sometimes
our fingers just bent back.
Now we chew our tongues.
May your hair grow long...
We might need something
to climb back on.
You always left
your front door open wide
for anyone to come in.
Don’t you mind?
I parked my car
outside your yard.
I left the key.
I left the engine on.

Be Good
03:47
|
|

So I guess this is the end.
The end of the nights that I spend
in stranger’s basements,
surrounded by friends of my friends.
I heard they said
the sea air did good for my head.
But sometimes I hear whispers say
that it just made a mess
when their anchors got caught
in my chest
Do we part
ways with a handshake or
by getting high, for what’s always the last time?
We’ll be vacant-eyed but we’ll be good.
I’ll be back in the summer
of next year if you’ll still be here.
Until then, just keep me in mind
and I’ll try to keep you in mine.
I stole the calm that met the shore
from the place where you were born.
I’m not the ghost at your door.
Don’t leave a light on.
